STUDIES
CENTER (3976-3978)

Credit .25 – Semester
Available in our Developmental Studies Center are
opportunities to sharpen your study and testing techniques in subjects
requiring reading, spelling, writing, math, and critical thinking
skills. Each DSC student works with a mentor teacher to improve
organization and study skills. Students with special learning needs
receive an Individualized Education Plan.
Also, juniors or seniors may participate in a program,
“Survivor in College.” Each student individually contracts
to come to the Center for a period of time (usually during a study
hall) to work on specific skills required for taking PSAT, SAT,
or ACT tests and achievement tests.
Materials used vary according to each student’s
needs, but all will have access to a variety of reading materials,
taped presentations, and computer programs which aid in increasing
reading efficiency.
Placement in the DSC requires approval of your Guidance
Counselor.

Students desiring to take the Book portion
and/or Behind-the-Wheel portion will need to listen to the Daily
Bulletin Announcements for sign-up dates and times. Sign-ups are
on a first/come first/serve basis. The student must be present in
order to sign-up. The announced fee must be paid at the time of
sign-up. The student must pass the book portion in order to take
the Behind-the-Wheel instruction.
DRIVER
EDUCATION - Book (9818)
Elective – 9, 10, 11, 12
Credit 0 – Quarter
PREREQUISITE: None
The classroom portion of Driver Training is offered three times
during the year, after school in the fall and early in the second
semester, as well as, in the first two weeks after school is out
(9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.)

DRIVER EDUCATION - Behind
the Wheel (9819)
Elective – 9, 10, 11, 12
Credit 0 – 2 weeks (Summer)
PREREQUISITE: Driver Education (Book Portion)
The driving portion of Driver Training is offered to a few students
in the fall and spring with most students taking it in the summer.
Students will drive for 40 minutes a day and observe for 80 minutes
during their two hour sessions of two weeks. This class teaches
the basics in driving a car and fulfills the state requirement of
six hours behind the wheel. At the successful completion of this
class a Waiver may be granted to the student which allows them to
obtain an Operator’s License without taking a driving test.

PEER MINISTRY
Offers the opportunity to serve other students as a helper in a
“Good Samaritan” fashion. Students will help freshmen
adjust to high school, introduce transfer students to CLHS, and
listen to students in need of a friendly ear. Peer ministers also
perform service activities in the community. Students must undergo
a training session (weekend) in order to qualify for this activity
and must serve for a class period during at least one semester during
each year. Applications for training are available from the Director
of Guidance and must be completed and signed before a student can
list peer ministry service work on his/her schedule. Students are
selected for Peer Ministry.

SERVICE WORK
Students may elect service work in any area listed below as one
of the daily periods. Before signing up for a service course, the
student must receive written permission from the faculty member
in charge of the service area. The areas in which service can be
taken are as follows: Art, Business, Computer, Developmental Studies
Center, English, Industrial Technology, IMC, JROTC, Mathematics,
Music, Peer Ministry, Physical Education, Science, Video Production,
Athletic Department, Main Office, Student Services, and Cafeteria.
