BIOLOGY I (7103-7104)
Elective – 9, 10, 11, 12
Credit 2 – Year
*AHD - Science
PREREQUISITE: None. Freshmen are encouraged to enroll if they have a “B” or better in junior high science and are enrolled in or have taken Algebra 1-2.

Biology I provides, through regular laboratory and field investigations, a study of the structures and functions of living organisms and their interactions with their environment. At a minimum, this study explores the functions and processes of cells, tissues, organs, and systems within various species of living organisms and the roles and interdependencies of organisms within populations, communities, ecosystems, and the biosphere. Students have opportunities to: (1) gain an understanding of the history of the development of biological knowledge, (2) explore the uses of biology in various careers, and (3) cope with biological questions and problems related to personal needs and social issues. REQUIRED: COLORED PENCILS, CALCULATOR, 3-RING NOTEBOOK

INTEGRATED CHEMISTRY-PHYSICS (7004-7005)
Elective – 10, 11, 12
Credit 2 – Year
*AHD - Science
PREREQUISITE: Algebra I

Integrated Chemistry-Physics introduces the fundamental concepts of scientific inquiry, the structure of matter, chemical reactions, forces, motion, and the interactions between energy and matter. This course will serve students as a laboratory-based introduction to possible future course work in chemistry or physics while ensuring a mastery of the basics of each discipline. The ultimate goal of the course is to produce scientifically literate citizens capable of using their knowledge of physical science to solve real-world problems and to make personal, social, and ethical decisions that have consequences beyond the classroom walls. REQUIRED: SCIENTIFIC CALCULATOR and QUADRILLE LINED LAB NOTEBOOK

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE - Advanced (7502-7503)
Elective – 10, 11, 12
Credit 2 – Year
*AHD –Science
PREREQUISITE: Biology I, Chemistry or currently taking Chemistry, and APPLICATION SUBMITTED TO SCIENCE DEPT (get application form from Guidance or Science Dept.)

Environmental Science, Advanced, is interdisciplinary by nature integrating biology, earth science, chemistry, and other disciplines. This course is designed to challenge students through an in-depth scientific study of ecosystems, population dynamics, resources and their management, and environmental consequences of natural and anthropogenic processes. Students will formulate, design, and carry out laboratory and field investigations as an essential course component. Ultimately, the goal of this course is to provide students with essential tools for understanding the complexities of environmental systems. Course of study includes soil and water ecosystems, pollution and environmental issues, and endangered species. Students will identify and classify local plants, animals, and invertebrates, map an ecosystem habitat, collect and run chemical tests on soil and water samples, conduct field investigations, and culture collected specimens. A research presentation, an ecosystem project and an outdoor education project will be part of the course requirements. Members of this class will also be trained to mentor local elementary students in outdoor education activities. Extensive periods of time will be spent outside in Our Creator’s Classroom Nature Area. REQUIRED: QUADRILLE LINES LAB NOTEBOOK, OLD SHOES FOR WALKING IN RIVER, BINOCULARS (optional)
