CLHS Students Traveled to Costa Rica in 2007

Costa Rican Expedition (June 5-12, 2007)

In June of 2007, Miss Marks, 7 students and three adults traveled to Costa Rica for 8 days. We began our trip by traveling from San Jose (the capital city located in the central valley) to the Tortuguero Canals (located on the Caribbean Coast). We spent two days in a primitive hotel located in the Tortuguero Canals. It was a one hour bus ride (from the paved road) to the boat dock - for a two and a half hour boat ride to our hotel. Because Tortuguero is a natural wildlife preserve, there are no roads or bridges. All travel in Tortuguero is by boat. We spent three days and two nights in Tortuguero, playing in the pool, exploring the rain forest, and traveling through the canals by boat. We then transferred to Arenal, the area surrounding the active Arenal Volcano. We spent an evening at a Hots Spring and Spa and then continued up the mountain to our hotel overlooking the Arenal Lake and Volcano. We were lucky enough to see volcanic activity while we were there, but unlucky enough to have the volcanic activity knock out the bridge we needed to cross to reach our hotel. We unloaded our charter bus, loaded a school bu, and went off-raoding through the river in the school bus. This was quite an adventure, and the next morning we got to do the whole trip in reverse. The next day we traveled from the Arenal region to the Monteverde Cloud Forest where we spent three days and two nights. On the way to Monteverde we spent an afternoon in a local village playing soccer, Duck-Duck-Goose, and Red Rover with the village children. This was one of the highlights of the trip. While in Monteverde, we hiked the Santa Elena Cloud Forest, each person planted a tree to help with a re-forestation project, visited a butterfly sanctuary, and took part in a canopy tour. The canopy tour was a series of 18 zip lines above the tree canopy. It also included a tarzan swing where you were hooked onto a rope, jumped off a platform 30-35 feet in the air, and swung. We finished our trip by traveling back to San Jose, stopping for some shopping on the way. We had a great time, and look forward to traveling to Spain in June of 2009.
