Leadership Excellence A Concordia Tradition

Concordia’s Leadership and Citizenship Program is a cooperative effort between the school and the Army. The Army Junior ROTC program had been an integral and outstanding part of Concordia’s academic tradition since 1935. JROTC is NOT a military program. JROTC IS a leadership and citizenship development program. Many of Concordia’s most distinguished alumni participated in the program. Concordia’s Corps of Cadets is recognized as one of the best programs in the nation.

Concordia’s JROTC program develops confident, caring Christian leaders and citizens. Students learn leadership skills, problem-solving, planning, and organizational skills, decision making processes, team building, effective speaking and writing.

Students also learn strengths such as integrity, self-confidence, responsibility and the ethical values of honor, commitment, respect, loyalty and self-less service. Honors, awards and promotions encourage achievement.

The mission of the Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps is “To Motivate Young People To Become Better Citizens.”

Its purpose is to instill in students the values of citizenship, service to the community and to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment.

JROTC objectives are to develop in each cadet the following:

  1. Appreciation of the ethical values and principles that underlie good citizenship which include; integrity, responsibility, and respect for authority.
  2. Leadership potential with the abilities to live and work cooperatively with others.
  3. Ability to think logically and to communicate effectively.
  4. Importance of physical fitness and good health.
  5. Knowledge of the effects and dangers of substance abuse.
  6. Abilities of goal setting, and positive self-esteem.
  7. The history, purpose, and structure of the military.
  8. Knowledge of educational and vocational opportunities.
  9. Importance of a high school education.

In meeting these objectives this student-run program prepares students for life – not for the military. JROTC training gives them the skills needed to succeed in life.
