CLHS Student Activities

Participation in co-curricular activities enriches a student's high school life and enables him to learn skills, develop talents, make new friends and share interests. Students are encouraged to participate in different areas of the school program, keeping in mind all of their responsibilities.

Many student activities and clubs are open to any student who wishes to take part, while others require the student to participate in a selection process which may include election or audition by peers of faculty or involve being enrolled in a related course in the curriculum. Some are courses in the curriculum for which the student must be registered and gain approval of the instructor. Most groups elect their own officers, giving students leadership experience. Many involve doing service work for the school or community. While, in most cases, there is no fee for participation, student activities must be self-supporting and often involve fund raising as part of their program or fees for special activities.

New students interested in a particular activity should contact the faculty advisor or sponsor. A list of those teachers is provided in the Student and Parent Handbook distributed at the beginning of the school year. School clubs announce meetings and auditions through the Daily Bulletin.

Student Activities include various academic-related clubs, service organizations and interest activities.

Junior ROTC (JROTC) has been an outstanding and integral program of Concordia's academic tradition since 1935. Concordia's JROTC program offers students a unique and exciting opportunity to learn and grow as Christian leaders. JROTC is a leadership and character development program, NOT a military program; a dynamic comprehensive alternative to physical education courses. JROTC students may also participate in numerous extra-curricular activities including camping and kayaking, competition drill teams, competition sports marksmanship teams, and a club for those students interested in role playing games and chess.

Religious Activities include Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Prayer Warriors, Praise Band, Koinonia Groups, and Campus Life.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) meets on alternate Thursday mornings beginning on the second week of school. The group meets in the Chapel Auditorium Lobby at 7:30a.m. for Bible study, songs and prayer. Bible studies and discussions focus on Christianity and the athlete's life. The goal is to encourage athletes to apply Christian principles to their athletics as well as their day-to-day life. Topics are chosen according to questions and situations that the athletes request.

Prayer Warriors is a group of students and teachers who pray for concerns of the CLHS family and who are responsible for sending out the "prayer grams" and the "birthday grams" during the school year along with privately praying for those people.

The CLHS Praise Band consists of a few students who frequently provide Concordia's Wednesday chapel services with more contemporary worship songs and style. Each school year the band leaders and members may change, so they meet with the Director of Campus Ministry to discuss the types of songs that would be appropriate and which would be good at different chapel services. Both music style and the words are vital in planning what they do. The goal of the Praise Band is to praise the Lord in music and to inspire more participation from both students and faculty in CLHS chapel services.

The Koinonia Ministry at CLHS is a personal spiritual mentoring program established to grow the fruit of the Spirit in our lives and to prepare spiritual leaders for the church. The entire staff and student body is divided into small groups of about twelve students with a teacher mentored student leader. The student leaders are enrolled in a spiritual leadership class that meets twice per week. The groups meet once each week to pray for each other an to seek answers from God's word for issues that are impacting their lives.

Campus Life gives CLHS students another opportunity to grow in their Christian life and faith. This group meets once a week in the evening and uses variety of activities to explore God's Word and to apply it to daily life.

Student Leadership and Service Activities include membership in the Student Council, Class Officers, National Honor Society, and Key Club.

Student Council is made up of elected and appointed CLHS students who plan and carry out various extra-curricular activities for the student body. The Student Council solicits the wants and concerns of the student body and acts as the go-between with the faculty and administration. CLHS Student Council belongs to and is involved in the statewide organization "Indiana Student Council Association".

Class Officers are elected and appointed by their peers. They are responsible for the planning and organizing of the class fundraiser for the year, the class' responsibilities for homecoming, and to represent their class on Student Council.

The National Honor Society recognizes students for outstanding and consistent Scholarship accomplishments who also demonstrate the highest quality of Leadership, Service and Character traits. Membership in out chapter of NHS is through invitation and application. The chapter promotes academic achievement, leadership and integrity of character, and is involved in service tot he school and community.

Key Club is the high school are of Kiwanis International, a service organization. Our club is affiliate with the Johnny Appleseed Chapter of Kiwanis International. Key Club accepts many different service projects during the school year. The students often volunteer for individuals who need help around their homes. We help non-profit organizations raise funds through different events. Some projects we have participated in are Study Connection, Habitat for Humanity and the Thirty Hour Famine. Over 50 organizations and individuals haven benefited from Key Club activities.

Student Publications

Concordia's yearbook (Luminarian) and newspaper (The Voice) are award-winning publications. These are a part of both the academic program and student activity program.

The Concordia Lutheran High School Luminarian is a yearly publication with a history in excellence. The job of the Luminarian staff is to capture the essence of CLHS. We do this through writing, photography, and advertisement. Each student is given a responsibility in one or more of the following areas: journalism, photography, layout, sales and marketing, or editor. Yearbook is an elective course that meets 7th hour.

Concordia's school newspaper, The Voice, is the publications that positively represents its school, while providing "hands-on" learning experiences for its students. Journalistic principles are taught and the classroom atmosphere is as close to a real newsroom as possible. Students choose their stories, and go through the entire publishing process. The end result is a monthly newspaper of which they can feel proud. The staff becomes a family as it encounters the joys and stresses accompanying the transition from theory to the practical application of journalistic standards.
