Contrary to popular belief, teachers don’t just dissolve into a cloud of whiteboard dust or disappear into some mystical teacher lair when school’s out. In fact, most of us spend our summers with a perfect blend of rest, adventure, and yes, sometimes work.
No, we don’t sleep until September, and while we’d love to say that we spend three straight months lounging by the pool, sipping lemonade, and reading novels, that’s only a tiny sliver of the truth.
Summertime for me means I can finally tackle that pile of books that’s been collecting dust on the nightstand, rediscover hobbies, babysit my granddaughter, and do some gardening. Many of us travel to Iceland or Italy, but I won’t be going that far! I’ll head out to Kentucky to the Ark in just a few weeks with my whole family. Yes, all three of my kids, their spouses and their children!
However, let’s not forget that I, along with many other teachers, am thinking about how to make this coming year the best year yet. We are praying for the students we have sent off to college, apprenticeship programs, or jobs, as well as for all of our students for this coming year. While it is still summer, the next school year is always lurking on the horizon, whispering, “Bulletin boards… seating charts… lesson plans…”
