Comfort and Joy

Comfort and Joy

Has the Christmas season brought you comfort and joy? How are you feeling with just a couple days left until Christmas day? I think if I’m honest, I’m not sure true comfort and joy have resounded with the many responsibilities present, boxes to check, and just “things to get done” that seem to abound! As I ask around it seems that there are never enough days, or enough time in a single day to feel the comfort of accomplishing the pressing needs of the day, nor is there time to experience much joy in the process.

Life can certainly get that way, can’t it? The focus on the everyday challenges, and there can be many, takes our energy and eyes off of celebrating with true joy the comfort we have in the gift of Christmas … Christ!

As I’ve gotten older I find myself realizing that although checking the next box is nice, and could bring some momentary comfort that I got something done, that moment is fleeting because the next thing on the list needs to be done, then the next, and the next! I’m learning that seeking comfort and joy in accomplishing the things on my list are not long lasting. However, sharing the Christmas joy with others, finding comfort in the fact that during this time we truly celebrate the gift that changed everything for us, is a lasting joy that can never be taken away, no matter what the circumstance or how long the list is!

That’s my prayer for us during this Christmas time. As you spend time with family and friends, enjoying Christmastime traditions, focus on the true comfort and joy that comes from the foundation of this celebration. Take time to reflect and allow this truth to wash over your heart and mind. As you hear the familiar story of Mary and Joseph and their travels, let the words of the angel fill your heart, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people…” (Luke 2:10) Take comfort in knowing you have a Savior!

Merry Christmas to you and yours, God’s blessings in the New Year, and may the comfort and joy of our Savior’s birth be with you!
