History behind our gym floor replacement

This summer we are replacing our gym floor ,which was constructed in 1963, with a brand new gym floor.  I would like to enlighten you with a brief history of the CLHS gym. Phil Amt, a 1964 alumnus, fondly informed me about our past gym usage that I was unaware of.

As stated, our gym floor was installed in 1963. Previously, Bishop Luers and Concordia Senior College served as the home site for Concordia basketball games. Practices had been held at the Tokheim gym off New Haven Avenue, just a five-minute walk from the Maumee campus. There was no gymnasium at the original Maumee campus.

At our present location, the gym was nicknamed “The Cage,” because it was below ground level and surrounded by wire mesh. It became an instant hit with players, fans and alumni. It was not where you wanted to play as an opposing team. Not only were the fans packed in the bleachers on both sides, but many games were “Standing Room Only,” with fans being able to surround the court on the upper level.

Phil stated that it was such a blessing to be part of the first graduating class that was able to participate on such a beautiful, spacious facility at that time! We are very thankful to God and our loyal supporters for the improvements that have been made to our facility!!

This renovation will kick off future renovations in following years.
