John 16:33 “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world
you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
In Biblical Literature this week we read and wrote a journal on John 16. Verse 33 is the
final verse in the chapter. Earlier in the chapter, Jesus is telling his disciples that he is
going away for a while, but then coming back. He tells them that they will have sorrow,
but that their sorrow will turn into joy.
Since my second year of teaching, I have had John 16:33 in a frame on my desk in my
classroom. This verse continues to comfort me when sorrows seem overwhelming. It
is a reminder that even though we will have trouble in this world, there is something
more. Christ has overcome the world!! That means that we can have peace and rest in
him, even when things seem out of control. Does that take away the pain and hurt we
feel on this earth? Not necessarily. But it does give us incredible hope and joy in the
promises he gives us in his word. Promises that he is always with us; that he has
defeated sin, death and the devil for us; and that we have the hope and joy of eternity
with him and all those who believe. Christ’s resurrection brings lasting joy - not just joy
for the moment. And that brings us peace.
So take heart; he has overcome the world!
